1960-2010: “The Year of Africa” 50 Years On (VII)

This Day in 1960:



The Malgasy Republic (Madagascar) gained independence from France.

British Somaliland became independent and five days later (July 1st) was united with Italian and French Somaliland as the Somali Republic.




This Day in 2010:


In spite of a star-studded line-up of international entertainers (at Madagascar's independence 50th anniversary) , the atmosphere is not exactly festive because of the political uncertainty and the economic hardship that has resulted from the 18 month-long crisis.

Bar-kulan- Ali Mohamud Rage, better known as Ali Dere who is the spokesman of Al-shabab militia group in Somalia has declared that it is sin to celebrate the independence of Somalia, claiming that the celebrations are not in accordance with the Islamic Sharia.
