Angola: The Fall of a Creole Elite?

Abstract: The main purpose of this essay is to investigate different interpretations of the concept of creoleness that may be applied to late nineteenth-century Angola in order to understand whether the definition of a "creole elite" is pertinent when used to refer to the group of filhos da terra, filhos do país or filhos de Angola engaged in conversations about rights and citizenship with one another, with the wider literate population in Angola, with the colonial authorities, and with the literate population in the metropolis.
