MY 'NORMA JEANE MOMENT', MY 'STRAIGHT STORY', OR ‘I AS A PIECE OF ART’

This was a ‘performance’ I took part in at the Frieze Art Fair the other day.

What was it all about?

Well, I signed a form that said:

Norma Jeane
The Straight Story
Frieze Projects 2008

The artist Norma Jeane has produced a performance, The Straight Story, for Frieze Projects.
This performance takes place inside the three transparent booths located in square P13. The piece will be performed by visitors to Frieze Art Fair who agree to take part by smoking one cigarette inside one of the booths.
The artist will be performing in the piece but to conceal his/her identity, also requires that members of the public impersonate him/her and give the performance on his/her behalf.

By signing this form you agree that:

- You will take part in the performance entitled ‘The Straight Story’ on behalf of the artist Norma Jeane.
- Your performance will consist of you entering one of the booths, smoking a cigarette in full view of the public, extinguishing your cigarette in the receptacle provided and exiting the booth.
- You understand the health risks associated with smoking and take part in the performance at your own risk.
