Reports from Angola say authorities have arrested up to 20 people who were trying to protest against the rule of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
A local news outlet, Angola 24 Hours, says security forces detained the protesters Monday at the May 1 Square in the capital, Luanda.
Other reports say those arrested include three journalists from the independent Novo Jornal newspaper and a rapper who has been critical of the government.
Anonymous activists had called for an anti-dos Santos rally in the capital Monday. Officials speaking through state media warned Angolans against attending the demonstration.
On Saturday, thousands of Angolans took part in a pro-government rally in Luanda.
President dos Santos has ruled Angola since 1979. The country is rich in diamonds and oil, but most of its population lives in poverty.
